Cocoa Mulch can Harm Dogs and Even Kill Them

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

A lot of people start planting their gardens during Spring, and there’s a certain kind of mulch that can potentially harm their pets. Cocoa mulch is gaining popularity and can be very bad for dogs and other pets who try to eat it.

This mulch is made out of cocoa bean shells, which contain Theobromine. As mentioned in a previous post, Theobromine is very poisonous to dogs and cats. Some cocoa mulch companies have managed to get most of the Theobromine out of their mulch, but there are still others who don’t do that kind fo filtering.

The mulches are popular for their color and scent, unfortunately, that scent is also appealing to some pets. If a dog eats enough of the unfiltered cocoa mulch, it will get sick and can possibly die. Small amounts of Theobromine will cause vomiting and minor illness, but if your yard is covered in the stuff, there’s a good chance a large amount can be eaten by your pets.

There are plenty of other mulches to choose from, and if you really need to have the cocoa mulch, just make sure it’s one that has gotten rid of most of the Theobromine.

The unfiltered cocoa mulch is so bad for pets that some lawmakers are trying to get bills passed that require people to put up signs in their yards warning against the presense of the cocoa mulch. While owners should always try to be aware of what their dogs are eating, it’s not always possible to do so.

Signs would be helpful to owners who are walking their dogs, but realistically, this mulch seems to do more harm than good and should be avoided if at all possible.

Scientists Make Cloned Beagles Glow Red, but Why?

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Scientists in South Korea say they have successfully cloned dogs that glow red under ultraviolet light. Not only do they glow red, but they also have a slightly red color on parts of their bodies with thin layers of skin.

Other than the light red tint, the beagles look normal to the naked eye. They seem to act like any other dogs, they just have genes that are a little different. There are a total of six glowing dogs, all named “Ruppy” referring to the combination of the words “ruby” and “puppy.”

While the red glow is an interesting effect for a dog to have, the scientists aren’t stopping there. The idea of the experiment is this will show that genes can be placed into living things to alter their genetics. The possibilities that stem from injectable genes are endless and have the potential to cure some very tough diseases.

The beagles were confirmed to be clones through DNA testing before the glow genes were introduced. Similar experiments have taken place in Europe, but until now, there has only been success with cats, rats and pigs.

The Korean scientists say the research is still under way and refuse to give all of the details of the experiments. It is unknown exactly where the glowing genes came from, but less than a year ago a glowing red fish was discovered that has a strangely similar tint of red when compared to the glowing dogs. There are also species of jellyfish that emit that color light to lure in their prey.

Automated, Coin Operated Dog Washes Gain Popularity

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

There is a new kind of facility popping up at car washes around the country. Now, when you go get your car washed, you may also have the option to clean your dog.

There are different kinds of washes for dogs, just like their are for your car. Some dog washes are self-serve where you drop in some coins and get a squirt-gun looking thing to spray off your dog, other washes are automated and involve you putting your dog inside of a machine.

At first, the automated dog washes can look a little intimidating, and they probably aren’t for skittish dogs. You put your dog inside of a compartment where the dog gets sprayed with a wash that lasts about four minutes, then a drying cycle takes place and lasts about 20 minutes. Some dogs seem to be calm during the events, but it’s hard to imagine that all dogs would be.

Washing your dog can be a messy experience, so it’s nice to have some other options out there for getting your pooch cleaned. Groomers can get expensive, and spending hours cleaning up your bathroom can be a hassle. Just make sure your dog is comfortable with the method, or your pet might start hating you for making it go through a traumatic experience.

Also, make sure your using the designated dog wash area of the car wash, using the regular car wash areas can cause harm to your dog. The dog wash areas keep the right temperature for your dog and use dog shampoo. Using a car wash section could cause skin problems for your dog, and possibly create other medical issues because of the cleaning chemicals made specifically for a car.

$1,000 Fines for Walking Dogs Off-Leash or Failing to Pick Up After Their Mess

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

People who walk their dogs off of a leash or forget to pick up after them in Baltimore will now receive $1,000 fines. While this will no doubt decrease the amount of violators in the city, it’s a very harsh punishment that some could argue is even a bit cruel to dog owners.

The increased fine equates dog walking violations to those of dog fighting and animal abuse. It’s tough to justify such an increase, especially in a time when people are pinching pennies during a rough economy. The new law wasn’t voted on by the people, and there was little to no press about the law before violators started getting fined.

To charge a fine like this to average people will hurt their finances and make it so they can’t afford basic necessities. The fine is a month or two of rent for a lot of people, so charging this much for such a minor offense is ridiculous.

It’s important to keep your dog on a leash when you take it for a walk. It keeps everyone (including your dog) safer, but it’s not a major crime. Picking up after your dog is also important, but the results of the minor infraction don’t have any real effect on society. While walking your dog without a leash can result in your dog biting someone and getting in a fight with another dog, what does not picking up after your pet do?

To charge $1,000 for not picking up after your pet doesn’t make any sense. This just looks like a city’s way to try and gain extra income, but they’re doing it wrong. To take away so much money from pet owners for minor offenses is a terrible way for a city to make money.

The law went into effect on April 1, and citizens who have a problem with it are told to notify their city council members. People who receive the gigantic fine can appeal it in the Environmental Court. Howard being walked on a leash

How Many Cats is too Many?

Monday, April 13th, 2009

How many cats do you think is too many? Most people have between one and three cats, which seems reasonable, but there are those people who go overboard. If you’re adopting more cats than you can possibly take care of, remedy the situation before law enforcement does.

Recently, a woman in New Jersey was found with nearly 100 cats running around her $1 million home. Law enforcement got a search warrant, and went in to check out the situation. They immediately took over 20 cats out of the house, and plan to take the remaining 70 or so in the near future.

Some of the cats had health problems, while others were thought to be offspring of feral cats that got in the house and bred with the pets that lived there.

This shows that you can’t have as many cats as you want, even if you live in a $1 million, 12 bedroom house. It’s simply too much for one person or one family to care for while still leading healthy lives themselves.

People like this seem to believe that by taking in any cat that needs a home, they are doing good in the world, but this isn’t the case. By taking in a cat when you don’t have the means to support it, you are effectively making that cat’s situation worse.

While the cat may have food and shelter, it has the share those things with dozens of other cats. Having so many cats under one roof can cause respiratory problem, fighting and an inability to clean up all of the spots where the cats will vomit, urinate and defecate.

If you know of cats that need a home, find a good shelter for them. Don’t take the responsibility on yourself to care for all of the cats, you’ll just make their lives, and yours, worse than they should be.

Newborn Yorkie Puppies Get Help From Ustream Chat

Friday, April 10th, 2009

An ultra-cute litter of Yorkshire Terrier puppies were born recently with the help of a chat room and streaming video from Ustream. While the mother of the puppies was in labor, video was streaming over the Internet and people were able to give advice during the event.

Some veterinarians were in the chat room and gave their expert advice about what to do during the birth. The owner of the puppies said advice telling them to make sure the sac was broken once the puppies were out was very helpful.

The chat room was also helpful because the owners went to bed after four puppies were born. They thought that was the entire litter, but found out from some frantic calls later that the mother was still giving birth. Without the live streaming video, the owners wouldn’t have known to go back in and help with the fifth puppy.

It’s amazing to see streaming video and chat rooms making a positive impact on society. People are able to use these as tools to help them in their personal lives.

There was such a positive response in the chat room, that now the owners are allowing Ustream users to name the puppies. There are five puppies to name and if you want your two cents thrown in, make sure to visit the site.

The streaming puppies can be seen below. I’m not sure how long the owners will keep the video going, but as long as the stream is up, the video below should work.

12-Year-Old Dog Survives Five Weeks in Highland Hills Before Rescue

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Following the incredible news out of Australia about a dog who survived four months on a desert island, another miraculous survival story has come up. This time, it’s about a near-deaf dog who survived a stroke, then got lost for five weeks before being found and reunited with his owners.

Oliver was 12 and a half years old when he wandered off on one of his walks. His family searched for hours, but had eventually given up and went home. They figured he went off to die, since he had a stroke a couple months earlier and the vet said he could go at any time.

To their surprise, Oliver was foundĀ  miles away from where he wondered off. He was very hungry and thirsty, and after his rescuer fed him and gave him water, the man washed off Oliver’s dog tags to see the contact information of his owners.

The owners were ecstatic to hear that Oliver had been found, and he’s now safe back at home. The only thing that has changed is he has a new nickname. Now, his owners call him “Wonderdog.”

Here’s a clip of some other animals that were lost in the woods, but eventually found their way out. They traveled a lot further than Oliver, but had each other to help them along the way. Of course, it always helps to have a cat who can fish for you.

The Truth Behind PETA Killing Pets

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

A lot of negative press has come out against PETA regarding the fact that they kill, on average, about six animals a day and a total of 2,124 animals last year. Critics say this is hypocritical to what PETA stands for, and companies that PETA protests against are using this opportunity to attack PETA and cause them to lose credibility.

This is a very cheap attack, and stretches the truth behind what PETA actually does. The tragic truth is, sometimes killing an animal is the only ethical way to help it.

The kinds of animals PETA kills aren’t healthy pets that PETA maliciously steals and murders for the fun of it. Some of the articles out about PETA right now seem to make it sound that way.

PETA is peacefully euthanizing animals who are in such bad shape, that to live would only be to suffer every second of every day. Some people don’t want to admit this fact, but if you look at some of the pictures PETA includes in their article, you’d understand (WARNING: pictures are very graphic).

The information about PETA killing animals was first spread around the Internet by a group called the Center for Consumer Freedom. This group has published multiple articles attacking PETA, and is the main source behind most of the articles out that make PETA look bad. Coincidentally, this group is funded by companies who PETA attacks as being cruel to animals.

Companies like Tyson Foods and Wendy’s Corporation fund the Center for Consumer Freedom, which causes the group to show an obvious bias against those that the food corporations hate. If Wendy’s loses money because of what PETA is saying, then the Center for Consumer Freedom might also lose funds, because Wendy’s will have less money to dish out.

It’s a shame organizations will go to such lengths to attack groups that do nothing except protect the lives of living creatures who can’t protect themselves. Sure, sometimes PETA goes overboard with their demonstrations, but attacks like this are not justified.

If the information being spread around was from credible sources, things would be different. But as it stands, the biggest group against PETA is funded by massive, animal killing corporations.

Cats’ Central Nervous System Could be Key to Curing Multiple Sclerosis

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Recent studies prove cats have a special kind of central nervous system which has the ability to heal certain parts of itself. The sheaths (myelin) around nerve fibers areĀ  able to regenerate, allowing damaged parts of the nervous system to regain function.

When myelin in humans deteriorates, some functions of the nervous system won’t work as well. In some cases this causes Multiple Sclerosis. If scientists could figure out exactly how cats are able to regenerate myelin, they could reproduce the affects in humans.

The study shows that cats who had myelin deteriorated with irradiated food lost some function, but regained it once they were taken off of the food. The myelin sheaths regenerated and the cats were able to regain the functions they once lost.

The technology to bring these traits in cats to humans isn’t available yet, but it seems like an avenue that scientists could take to try and fix humans nerve fibers. Modern medicine hasn’t been able to pinpoint how the nervous system works, and if cats can help us figure that out, then great!

Hopefully researchers look into this discovery more and are able to find out real ways to help people. Animals already help humans in a lot of ways, this would just be one more thing to help people realize how valuable our animals are to us.

Obese Pets and Their Ignorant Owners

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

About a third of pets are overweight or obese and their owners don’t realize a problem exists. This information comes from a survey that covered more than 2,100 households in the U.K.

Apparently, owners think their pets are magically immune to the weight problems that plague humans, and they don’t need to worry about keeping their pets within a safe weight range. The study claims 62 percent of dog owners don’t think they can do anything about their pet’s weight, and even worse, less than 25 percent say they read the advice on the food label that says how much to feed your animal.

The truth is, pets can suffer from the same types of problems that we get from being overweight. It’s important to know what the healthy weight range is for your specific pet and keep them within that range. If you see your pet gaining too much weight, it isn’t that hard to get your dog back on the right track.

Making a dog lose weight is just like making a human lose weight: it all about diet and exercise. If you don’t walk your dog everyday, than start. It’ll help your dog lose weight and keep increase happiness levels. If you do walk your dog regularly, consider feeding him or her less.

Make sure to check the label on the can or bag of food, then weigh your dog and see where your pet fits in and how much it should be consuming. This is an important step for a lot of owners, since the study also stated that only about one third owners knew their pet was fat.Howard wants more food

Don’t fall for your dog’s begging! Dogs can be very good and looking sad to get food from you, especially if you just put your pet on a diet. I know, it’s so cute and sad, but giving your dog what it wants now, might be hurting it later.
